Chronology

1986. Shane Crum begins dating Christine McNutt.

1988. Shane and Christine move to Florida.

September 4, 1991. Their daughter, K.C., is born.

1994. Shane and Christine separate and move back to Ohio. K.C. and Christine move in with Christine’s parents. Shane lives with his mother. Shane and Christine try living together again.

July 1995. Shane and Christine split up again. Christine and K.C. move back in with Christine’s parents. Shane moves in with childhood best friend, Sean Mowery, and his brothers, Mark and Christopher. K.C. would later claim that the abuse happened at this house.

October 1995. K.C. and Christine move in with Christine’s new boyfriend, Johnny Confalone. Shane begins dating Beth Blackstone...

October-December 1995. Shane is twice called home from work to authorize a doctor’s putting stitches in K.C.’s head. K.C. was being put in care of Christine’s alcoholic grandmother. Shane threatens to sue for custody should K.C. sustain another injury.

Christmas 1995. K.C. spends part of the holiday with Shane and Shane’s family.

Late December 1995. Johnny Confalone says that K.C. tried to give him an open-mouthed kiss while Johnny was caring for her. When asked, she says she learned that from TV. When pressed, she says “maybe my dad.” Shane is told that he can no longer see his daughter.

January 24, 1996. Denise Branson, of the Stark County Department of Human Services, receives a referral regarding K.C. She makes an appointment to interview K.C. at her home. She also contacts the police department.

February 7, 1996. Nurse Donna Abbott of the Children’s Hospital of Akron examines K.C. K.C’’s physical exam “was perfectly normal.” K.C says that Shane put his private part “inside my butt.” When asked what that felt like, “she said that she didn’t know.”

February 11 (or 13), 1996. Jill Stevenson of the Perry Township Police department receives Denise Branson’s report. She goes to K.C.’s home and interviews her with her mother Christine present. “I started if off by saying I was a police officer and, um, I had heard that something had happened to her, that someone had touched her private parts.” During the interview, K.C. draws a picture of her father’s penis. After the interview, she calls Shane and asks if he will come in and speak with her. Shane calls back and tells her that his lawyer has advised him not to come in. Shale later goes in against legal advice and signs a statement saying he did not molest K.C. and that he’d be willing to take a lie-detector test.

April 11, 1996. K.C. meets with clinical psychologist Dr. David Coleman of Child and Adolescent Services Center in Canton, Ohio. After the initial interview, K.C. met with Dr. Coleman four more times. During the fourth session, Coleman uses anatomical dolls.

August 5, 1996. K.C. has her last meeting with Dr. Coleman.

October 1996. Shane and Beth break up. Shane moves back in with Sean.

November 4, 1996. Shane is arrested and hires attorney James B. Lindsey.  Shane is offered a plea bargain: 10-25 years if he pleads guilty. He refuses. (He has now served 23 years.)

March 19, 1997. K.C. is determined competent to testify.

March 24 – March 26, 1997. The trial of Shane Crum.

March 27, 1997. Shane is found guilty on all counts.

March 31, 1997. Shane is sentenced to two life sentences plus two years, all sentences to run consecutively.

March 27, 1998. Shane files a direct appeal.

March 3, 1999. Ohio Supreme Court denies appeal.

February 19, 2004. Shane files for post-conviction relief.

December 27, 2005. Stark County Court of Appeals denies post-conviction relief.

March 9, 2007. Shane files a writ of Habeas Corpus in U.S. District Court.

May 12, 2008. Writ is denied by the District Court.
